AKEL: Britain Must Stay Consistent on Abolishing Guarantee System in Cyprus
AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanu said during his contacts in London that Britain must remain consistent with the positions it has previously expressed on UN resolutions and the guarantee system in relation to the Cyprus problem.
Stefanu called for the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were suspended in 2017 and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution.
According to Haravgi and Fileleftheros, Stefanu travelled to London last week with a party delegation as part of preparations for the general elections scheduled for May 2026. Within this framework, the delegation held meetings with British government officials and members of parliament, discussing recent developments in the Cyprus problem, the role Britain could play in efforts to overcome the current deadlock, as well as social policy issues such as the housing crisis and energy poverty.
Stefanu met with the Acting Head of the Mediterranean Office at the British Foreign Office, Nicolas Alexander, to discuss developments in the Cyprus issue, and with former Labour Party Minister for Housing Angela Rayner to address social matters.
Addressing his British counterparts, Stefanu stressed that negotiations on the Cyprus problem must resume from the point where they broke off in 2017, when the sides had come close to an agreement. He underlined that commitment must be maintained to a solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality.
Pointing out that Britain has played a decisive role in shaping decisions related to the Cyprus problem, Stefanu stated: “Britain must remain consistent with UN resolutions and with the position it has previously expressed on ending the guarantee system.”
Stefanu also expressed concern over the limited progress achieved so far in the Cyprus issue and supported the intensification of talks. He said emphasis should be placed on Confidence-Building Measures and on preserving the convergences that have already been achieved.
