Simon Aykut To Be Transferred To Israel To Serve Remainder Of Sentence

Greek Cypriot Justice Minister Costas Fitiris has said that the request to transfer Israeli national Simon Aykut — who was convicted in South Cyprus in a case concerning former Greek Cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus — to Israel to serve the remainder of his sentence constitutes an obligation under existing agreements.

Speaking on the matter, Fitiris noted that Israeli authorities had formally requested that Aykut serve his sentence in Israel and that this request must be assessed within the framework of international agreements. “It is our obligation to comply with this agreement,” he said.

According to the Cyprus Mail, Fitiris acknowledged that the case has generated public sensitivity due to its connection with former Greek Cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus, but stressed that South Cyprus must fulfil its international commitments. He added that the issue was being handled in the public interest and noted that since taking office in December, he has signed off on the transfer of 15 prisoners to other countries based on citizenship.

The Greek Cypriot Justice Minister further claimed that during contacts with the Israeli side, Israel had recognised South Cyprus’s position that former Greek Cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus were being used “illegally.” In this context, Fitiris said the Israeli government had issued travel and investment warnings to its citizens, advising them not to purchase properties built on former Greek Cypriot land in Northern Cyprus.

Fitiris warned that any delay in Aykut’s transfer to Israel could lead to consequences arising from non-compliance with an existing agreement, rather than affecting bilateral relations with Israel. “At some point, we must respond, otherwise there will be consequences,” he said.

Referring to Aykut’s sentence, Fitiris stated that due to his age, he could be eligible for release after serving half of his term, which would amount to approximately six to eight more months in prison. “We cannot put the public interest at risk for a six-month period. What matters is that a conviction has been secured and that the other state acknowledges this conviction concerns former Greek Cypriot properties,” he said.
