UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, voiced this expectation in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the Cyprus Mail, Dujarric said that the UN Representative, Maria Angela Holguin, “continues to work with both leaders to advance the confidence-building measures that have been agreed, with a particular focus on the opening of additional crossing points as soon as possible.”

He stressed that “the leaders need to demonstrate political will in order to build momentum, strengthen trust, and move the process forward toward a possible resumption of negotiations.”

Dujarric said Guterres will meet President Tufan Erhürman on Wednesday, describing the meeting as “an opportunity for an initial introduction and an assessment of the Cyprus issue.”

He added that Guterres will also meet Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides “at an appropriate time.”

This will be the first face-to-face meeting between Guterres and President Erhürman. The two had previously been in contact through an exchange of letters following the election held in October.

The next meeting between President Erhürman and Christodoulides is scheduled to take place on 24 February.
