Doughty: Resumption of Cyprus Talks Depends on the Two Leaders
UK Minister of State for Europe Stephen Doughty has said that Britain supports a fair and sustainable settlement to the Cyprus problem, but stressed that the resumption of substantive negotiations depends on the leaders of the two communities.
In a written response to a letter from the “National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom,” Doughty said a solution could only be achieved by addressing the consequences of the island’s division. According to a report by Haravgi, he underlined London’s continued engagement on the Cyprus issue and reiterated support for a settlement based on political equality.
Referring to last year’s informal expanded 5+1 meeting, Doughty described the talks as “important steps” and expressed hope that the UN-led process would gain new momentum.
He emphasised that confidence-building measures were crucial and noted that “the resumption of substantive negotiations depends on the leaders of the two communities.” Doughty added that the UK would continue to play an active role, with the objective remaining a solution founded on United Nations Security Council resolutions and the principle of political equality.
Doughty also thanked Greek Cypriots living in the UK for their “continued contributions” to efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem.
