Harmanci made the remarks during a session of the 15th Direct Dialogue Summit between EU Capital Mayors and the European Commission, which he attended at the invitation of Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos.

The session opened with a presentation by Stefan Simosas, Head of Cooperation at the European Commission’s Cyprus Settlement Support Unit. This was followed by addresses from Prountzos and Harmanci, who briefed EU capital mayors and representatives on the history of cooperation between the two municipalities and the challenges they have faced.

Harmanci underlined the importance of constructive dialogue and joint projects carried out at the level of local authorities in bringing the two communities closer together. He stressed that municipal initiatives, conducted independently of leader-level talks and negotiations, would continue to be advanced with care, mutual trust and determination in support of Cyprus’s reunification.

As work continues on the Kanlidere Project and on infrastructure that will enable the sharing of treated water with the south, the two mayors are also developing new joint projects and initiatives with the support of the European Commission and the UNDP.

Among the priorities discussed was the establishment of a new Nicosia Master Plan Working Group focusing on green energy, solid waste management, transport and smart city applications.

It was also noted that contacts with the European Commission are ongoing regarding the possible construction of a joint solar power plant that could meet the energy needs of both municipalities.
