Üstel: TRNC Sovereignty Is Not Up For Debate
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said the state belongs to all citizens and that any action harming this common structure should be considered a national security issue, stressing that the sovereignty of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is not open to discussion and that state institutions continue to function effectively.
In a written statement, Üstel underlined that national security cannot be limited to military matters alone, but also depends on political stability, economic continuity and social harmony. He said the country’s security and future were directly linked to the strength of its institutions, public peace and its strategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Üstel noted that national security is built on a political stance based on sovereign equality, adherence to the rule of law and the protection of public order. He added that today’s threats are not only physical, but also include disinformation, economic manipulation, perception operations and attempts to undermine trust in state institutions.
He warned that approaches which weaken the state’s official positions, damage social unity or act against national interests should be evaluated with caution. While criticism is a requirement of democracy, Üstel said, questioning the TRNC’s political stance based on sovereign equality or making irresponsible statements that could weaken the country’s position on international platforms goes beyond legitimate debate.
Describing the Eastern Mediterranean as a centre of global competition over energy resources and maritime jurisdictions, Üstel said the TRNC is not a passive actor but an active contributor to stability that firmly defends its rights.
He emphasized that the strong ties and guarantor system with Turkey form the backbone of the TRNC’s security architecture, adding that Turkey’s growing influence on the international stage under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan provides the strongest guarantee for protecting the rights and interests of the TRNC.
Üstel concluded that the most solid foundation of security is internal unity, stating that strengthening state capacity and preserving social solidarity are equal priorities. He said the TRNC is not an object of crises but part of the solution, and called on society to come together around national interests with responsibility and a shared sense of purpose.
