Police Report 659 Drivers and Arrest 12 in Islandwide Night Operation

Police carried out simultaneous security and traffic inspections in Famagusta, Kyrenia and Morphou on the night of February 24, resulting in legal action against 659 drivers, the impounding of 24 vehicles and the arrest of 12 individuals.

According to a statement from the Police Press Office, the inspections were conducted between 8 pm and midnight across the areas under the responsibility of the three district police directorates.

Famagusta

In Famagusta, police inspected entertainment venues, bars, nightclubs, coffee shops, betting offices and other crowded public areas. No criminal incidents were detected during the checks.

Traffic teams inspected 862 drivers. A total of 287 were reported for various offences, including speeding, driving without a licence or insurance, using unroadworthy vehicles, driving without valid permits, ignoring traffic signs, failing to obey stop signals, riding motorcycles without helmets and breaching traffic light regulations.

Kyrenia

In Kyrenia, inspections covered entertainment venues, bars, coffee shops, hotels, guesthouses and busy public areas. During the operation, nine individuals were arrested for residing in the country without legal status. One additional person was detained after police discovered five undeclared electronic hookahs in a vehicle.

Traffic checks involved 2,305 drivers, with 270 reported for offences such as speeding, drunk driving, driving without insurance or a licence, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts, breaching electric scooter rules, riding motorcycles without helmets and other traffic violations. A total of 24 vehicles were taken off the road.

Morphou

In Morphou, police focused on entertainment venues, bars, betting offices and crowded locations. Two people were arrested for illegal residence.

Traffic officers inspected 685 drivers and reported 102 for offences including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts, failing to obey traffic lights and other violations.

Police said similar inspections will continue as part of ongoing efforts to maintain public order and improve road safety across the country.
