EU: Only Lasting Solution in the Middle East Is Diplomacy
Ursula von der Leyen said the only sustainable solution to the crisis in the Middle East is a diplomatic one, calling for a credible transition process for Iran, the definitive end of its nuclear and ballistic programmes, and an end to destabilising activities across the region.
Speaking in Brussels at the signing ceremony of an “Agreement Package” with Switzerland, von der Leyen described developments in the Middle East as deeply worrying. She said she had been in contact over the weekend with nine Middle Eastern leaders and several European leaders, stressing that the situation remains fragile.
“Iran’s oppressed people now see a renewed sense of hope, and we strongly support their right to determine their own future,” she said.
Von der Leyen underlined the need for intensified efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent the conflict from spreading. She condemned what she described as “reckless and indiscriminate attacks” carried out by Iran and its proxy forces against sovereign territories in the region.
She emphasised that regional stability is of vital importance, adding: “The only lasting solution is a diplomatic one. This means a credible transition for Iran, the complete halt of nuclear and ballistic programmes, and an end to destabilising activities in the region.”
Von der Leyen noted that members of the European Commission would later discuss the overall situation, warning that recent developments could have consequences across a wide range of sectors, including energy, nuclear safety, transport, migration and security.
Meanwhile, Swiss President Guy Parmelin said Switzerland was “deeply concerned” about the ongoing escalation in the Gulf and the Middle East.
He called on all parties to protect civilians and infrastructure and to return to diplomacy as soon as possible. Parmelin added that Switzerland stands ready to assist if the sides seek to de-escalate tensions and resume diplomatic efforts.
