Greek Cypriot Finance Ministry Expands Traffic Fine System to Include TRNC-Plated Vehicles
According to Fileleftheros, the Greek Cypriot Finance Ministry has requested the release of €146,000 + VAT to enable fines for Turkish Cypriot drivers through the “Photoradar List” system.
The Ministry asked the House of Representatives’ Economy and Budget Committee to approve the funding for a service purchase that would allow traffic camera fines to be issued to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus-plated vehicles. The allocation is intended to cover one year of work for reviewing, installing, maintaining, and operating the radar system across Southern Cyprus, while updating it to ensure fines can be issued without court intervention.
Police sources told Fileleftheros that once the “Photoradar List” system is operational, it will make it easier to deliver fines to Turkish Cypriot drivers who previously could not be reached. However, responsibility and authority for delivering the fines will remain with the police, not the contracted company. The Traffic Department considers the system particularly important for drivers whose residential addresses are inaccessible.
Initially, under the Schengen framework, fines were planned to be served only at air and sea ports, but the system will now cover all areas. Implementation will take place at police stations, offices, and land crossings between Southern Cyprus and the TRNC. Soon, traffic fines will also be issued directly by traffic officers during roadside inspections.
