Letimbiotis: Cyprus Not Targeted; British Bases Were The Targets
The government of the Republic of Cyprus has denied claims that the country itself was attacked, following remarks by Emmanuel Macron.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said reports suggesting Cyprus had been targeted by drones and missiles were not accurate, stressing that incidents so far had only involved RAF Akrotiri, one of the United Kingdom’s sovereign base areas on the island.
Speaking to Sigma TV, Letymbiotis said, “You know that such a thing has not happened,” adding that “all incidents so far have targeted the British bases.”
He noted that two security incidents had occurred near Akrotiri. In one case, a drone was shot down, while a similar incident took place the following day.
Letymbiotis also said the current crisis highlights the importance of Cyprus’ strategic partnerships with European countries. He praised the solidarity shown by several states, including Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and Netherlands.
The spokesman added that the planned visits of Macron and Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Cyprus at the same time would send a strong message of political support.
