Aktunç: Supporting Tourism Is a Necessity, Not a Choice

Tourism Ministry Undersecretary Serhan Aktunç stressed that tourism provides the largest contribution to reducing the current account deficit, and supporting the sector is not optional but essential. Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s “Sabahın Haberleri,” Aktunç highlighted that savings measures should be implemented in a way that benefits tourism, otherwise economic losses could increase due to multiplier effects.

Aktunç: Supporting Tourism Is a Necessity, Not a Choice

He noted that while regional conflicts like the Iran war have affected global and regional economies, Northern Cyprus has maintained stability in flight operations, unlike Southern Cyprus, where many flights were canceled. However, reservations in the north have still decreased, and he called for stronger motivation of tourism stakeholders.

Aktunç emphasized isolating the tourism sector from external risks and promoting the country as a safe destination. He pointed out that high energy costs, personnel expenses, and rising input prices have weakened Northern Cyprus’s competitiveness, urging investment in projects like the Ada Kıbrıs initiative to strengthen the sector.

He warned that implementing savings measures that fail to support revenue-generating sectors could harm tourism and the wider economy. Aktunç stressed that support for the tourism sector, along with the private and service industries, is vital for sustaining economic growth, reiterating that tourism support is a necessity, not a choice.
