Gürcafer Warns: If Construction Sector Collapses, State Will Follow
Cafer Gürcafer warned that a collapse in the construction sector would have direct consequences for public finances, arguing that the state’s revenues are closely tied to the industry’s performance.
Speaking on Kanal T, Gürcafer said government income had already declined in line with the slowdown in construction activity, stressing that the sector plays a key role in generating direct revenue for the state.
He criticised the lack of economic planning, warning that without policies aimed at growth and increasing revenues, the economy risks falling into a “vicious cycle.” Gürcafer also expressed concern over what he described as the unregulated development of the construction sector, saying stakeholders were willing to contribute but necessary steps were not being taken.
Referring to regional instability, he called for the establishment of a crisis management mechanism and stronger precautionary measures. He also dismissed the government’s austerity policies as ineffective, saying they offered no tangible benefit to the sector.
Gürcafer further warned that the state has reached a point where it is borrowing to repay debt, adding that he sees no clear strategy to overcome the situation. He stressed the need for urgent measures to sustain the sector and boost state revenues.
