The letter, addressed to the British minister of state for Europe Stephen Doughty, calls for a review of the guidance to ensure it reflects a balanced assessment of current risks.

No travel can be guaranteed safe, but the current advice risks creating disproportionate alarm,” it said.

The current UK travel advice warns that “terrorist attacks in Cyprus cannot be ruled out” and cautions that regional escalation may lead to travel disruption.

“British nationals should take sensible precautions, considering their own individual circumstances,” the advice says.

The foreign office said, “no travel can be guaranteed safe” and advised researching destinations and getting appropriate travel insurance, which “should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency”.

The board further warned that overly cautious travel warnings could damage the island’s image as a safe destination, leading to economic repercussions.

The UK government has sought to reassure the republic, with British prime minister Keir Starmer having recently informed President Nikos Christodoulides that the security of Cyprus remains “fundamental to the United Kingdom,” and confirmed that British bases on the island will not be used for offensive military operations.

A decision has been taken to enhance the means contributing to the preventative measures already in place,” Starmer said, underlining that the islands’ facilities will be maintained for defensive purposes only.

An Iranian-type Shahed drone caused minor damage at Akrotiri on March 2, prompting increased security measures.

The British defence ministry has deployed an additional 500 personnel to Cyprus, while jets and other assets have been mobilised to maintain defensive readiness.

British Cypriots argued that travel advisories should reflect these reassurances.

The current wording may harm the perception of Cyprus as a secure and attractive destination,” the board said, urging that the guidance provide context about the island’s stability and its active role in regional security.

It underlined Cyprus’ dual role as both a tourist hub and a strategic partner.

Vigilance is essential, but the risk of terrorist activity is a global phenomenon and is not limited exclusively to the region,” the board wrote.

It urged the British government to ensure the public receive timely and proportionate guidance, particularly as Easter travel approaches.

Christodoulides further stressed the importance of coordination with the United Kingdom, assuring that the island’s security infrastructure has been bolstered by both military equipment alongside a European armada to mitigate any risk posed by the conflict.

Despite assurances, airlines and travel operators have already reported cancellations linked to the advisory, affecting flights and bookings across the island.

Tourism remains a cornerstone of the economy, and businesses fear further advisories could compound losses during the peak season.

The letter, stating that “we call on the British government to urgently examine the issue and revise the guidelines where necessary, reflecting both safety and the positive realities of Cyprus as a destination.”
