In a written statement on behalf of the union, Maviş argued that the proposal—covering approximately 3,500 donums of land and 174,000 saplings—has not been accepted by public conscience. He emphasized that the area in question is not merely a plot of land but a significant natural habitat in terms of ecosystem and wildlife.

Maviş noted that the forest area was created through the collective efforts of students, teachers and the wider community, underlining its social and environmental value.

“Universities should set an example by creating new living spaces without harming nature, rather than using existing forest land,” he said, adding that the institution could instead develop an alternative site and contribute by planting new trees, leaving a lasting legacy for society.

Rejecting the proposed amendment, Maviş stated: “As KTÖS, we oppose this legal change. Forests are the common property of the public; they cannot be transferred, commercialized or allocated.”

He further argued that the initiative represents not only an environmental concern but also an interference with the rule of law. Calling for the withdrawal of the proposal, Maviş urged the public to protect nature and shared societal values.

Maviş also included a pointed remark in his statement: “On one side are those who plant trees, on the other those who dismantle forests. The issue is simple: which side are you on?”
