According to reports, Starmer contacted Christodoulides following his return from Brussels. The discussion took place amid ongoing regional tensions and broader diplomatic coordination among European Union member states.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Christodoulides emphasized during the call that the Greek Cypriot administration considers itself a factor of stability in the region and highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation with the United Kingdom.
Letymbiotis noted that Christodoulides also underlined to EU leaders, within the framework of the European Council, the need for coordinated action to help bring an end to the ongoing crisis. Starmer, in response, expressed agreement and referred to a joint statement issued by the United Kingdom together with countries including France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
On the issue of British bases in Cyprus, Christodoulides reportedly referred to challenges arising from recent crises and shared lessons learned in crisis management to date, proposing that discussions be initiated on the matter.
Starmer, for his part, stressed that the security of the Republic of Cyprus is a priority for the United Kingdom and said that measures and capabilities in this regard would be strengthened. He also reiterated the commitment that the British bases would not be used in any offensive military operations.
