Weekly Traffic Report: One Dead, 24 Injured in 54 Accidents
Police data covering the period between 16–22 March shows that a total of 54 traffic accidents occurred across the country, resulting in one fatality, 24 injuries, and legal action taken against 1,707 drivers.
According to the Police Press Office, one of the accidents resulted in death, 18 resulted in injuries, and 35 caused only material damage. The single fatal accident claimed one life, while a total of 24 people were injured in the other incidents.
The report identified speeding as the leading cause of accidents, followed by careless driving, failure to stop at junctions, close following, and other factors. The total material damage from the accidents was estimated at 2,589,123 Turkish lira.
Breaking down the accidents by district, 20 occurred in Nicosia, 15 in Famagusta, 8 in Kyrenia, 8 in Morphou, and 3 in Trikomo.
During the same period, police conducted traffic checks on 12,649 drivers nationwide. As a result of these inspections, legal action was initiated against 1,707 drivers.
Speeding was the most frequently recorded offence, with 881 drivers cited. Additional offences included 41 speeding violations detected by mobile units, 18 cases of dangerous driving, 22 of careless driving, 91 of driving without a valid road license, and 35 of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Furthermore, 10 drivers were reported for using mobile phones while driving, 24 for not wearing seat belts, 49 for failing to obey traffic signs and signals, 13 for running red lights, and 58 for operating vehicles without valid inspections.
Authorities also impounded 148 vehicles and detained seven drivers during the enforcement operations.
