Speaking during his contacts in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Akar made a series of statements on the Cyprus issue, regional security dynamics, and broader geopolitical developments, while also answering questions from members of the press. He underlined that Turkey continues to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of the Turkish Cypriot people, describing this commitment as consistent and unwavering from the past to the present.
Akar pointed to key milestones in the island’s history, including the 1960 agreements, the intercommunal events of 1963, and the 1974 Peace Operation, stating that these developments played a decisive role in establishing security on the island. He framed these events as part of the historical context that continues to shape current realities and policy approaches.
Addressing past negotiation processes, Akar referred to initiatives such as the 2004 Annan Plan and the 2017 Crans-Montana talks, criticising what he described as the Greek Cypriot side’s stance in those negotiations. He argued that, in light of these processes and their outcomes, the federative model can no longer provide a solution to the Cyprus issue.
Instead, Akar explicitly stated that the only realistic solution is a structure based on two sovereign, equal states. He emphasised that this position reflects a broader policy consensus and is grounded in the current political and diplomatic landscape.
Responding to questions regarding guarantees, Akar stressed that the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee and Treaty of Alliance remain in force. He underlined that Turkey’s guarantor status is not open to discussion and reaffirmed that the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces on the island continues within this framework.
Akar also commented on military developments in South Cyprus and the presence of foreign military elements in the region, noting that such activities are being closely monitored. He said these developments should be assessed within the framework of international law and broader regional security considerations.
Referring to security concerns in general terms, Akar stated that Turkey has taken all necessary precautions and described defence and security as matters of continuous monitoring and preparedness. He added that operational decisions are taken in line with evolving conditions on the ground.
Reassuring the public, Akar said that Turkish forces remain on duty around the clock. “Mehmetçik is on duty 24/7, at the service of its nation. Be at ease,” he said, delivering a clear message on readiness and deterrence.
He concluded by reiterating that while Turkey supports peace, it will continue to take all necessary measures to maintain deterrence and protect its rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus.
