Üstel Inspects Girne-Çatalköy Road: Completion Expected by Mid-June
Ünal Üstel visited the ongoing construction site of the East Girne–Çatalköy road, announcing that work is progressing rapidly and the project is expected to be completed by mid-June. Authorities noted that delays were due to infrastructure and electricity line issues, but construction is planned to finish before summer.
During the inspection of the road within the scope of the East Ring Road project, Ünal Üstel was accompanied by Erhan Arıklı, officials from Capiton Construction Ltd., and local residents.
Üstel: “Çatalköy Road Will Be Completed Quickly and Stop Being a Burden”
Üstel acknowledged the inconvenience the construction has caused to local residents, business owners, and hotels, asking for their understanding. He emphasized that once finished, the road will provide relief to the community and that the government is fulfilling its commitment.
Noting that the tender for the road first opened in 2012 but was cancelled due to expropriation issues, Üstel said successive governments failed to start the project. His administration committed to completing the road, aiming to deliver a safe, dual-lane route for the region. “We will transform this road from a source of hardship into a modern, safe route accessible to all,” he said.
Collaboration With Local Authorities Is Key
Üstel warned that some obstacles might arise during construction and highlighted the unusually wet winter as a factor, stressing that these issues must be addressed through cooperation, particularly with local administrations. He criticized local authorities that fail to fulfill their duties, calling for practical solutions instead of populism.
He confirmed that the electricity poles obstructing construction are being relocated by Kıb-Tek crews, and asphalt work has commenced as weather conditions improve. According to the contractor, the road is scheduled for completion by mid-June, ahead of the official tender expiration on 1 July.
Üstel concluded by expressing confidence that the road will be completed before summer, easing local traffic and thanking residents, businesses, and stakeholders for their patience.
