European Commission Launches Process to Appoint New Cyprus Special Representative

The European Commission has begun the process of appointing a new Special Representative for Cyprus following Johannes Hahn’s departure from the role. The EU emphasized that it will continue supporting the peace process under UN resolutions and remain actively involved in efforts toward reunification.

According to the Greek Cypriot newspaper Haravgi, the Commission is “moving toward finding a new Special Representative.” A Commission spokesperson told the paper that Hahn informed President Ursula von der Leyen of his decision to take up the post as President of the Austrian National Bank, and that von der Leyen thanked the Austrian diplomat for his contributions.

The source also noted that the EU intends to appoint a new representative to continue supporting efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue and to remain actively engaged in the process.

The report highlighted the EU’s commitment to a functional, comprehensive, and lasting solution for the reunification of Cyprus within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.
