Hulusi Akar Sends Cyprus Message: ‘We Will Remain Until Peace Is Achieved’
Chairman of the Turkish Parliament’s National Defense Commission, Hulusi Akar, emphasized Turkey’s commitment to peace and stability in Cyprus, stating that Turkish forces will remain on the island until these conditions are met. Akar made the remarks during an interview on BRT’s “Gündem 12,” responding to statements by Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides regarding the Turkish military presence.
Akar criticized the approaches of the Greek Cypriot Administration and Greece as “detached from reality,” noting a discrepancy between their public statements and private, bilateral discussions. He said, “Whether it’s Southern Cyprus, the Greek Cypriots, or Greece, the Greeks, unfortunately, they take a self-serving approach completely detached from conscience, reason, history, and facts. They know it’s not accurate. In bilateral, unofficial meetings, they acknowledge this properly. Yet in front of cameras and the media, they make claims that do not align with reality.”
Reaffirming Turkey’s consistent stance on the Cyprus issue, Akar stressed the importance of resolving problems through dialogue and diplomacy.
He added, “We have always stood for peace. We have always supported resolving bilateral issues through dialogue. We have always advocated for diplomatic solutions, and we continue to do so everywhere. Our position has not changed. We are here for peace and stability, and we will remain until peace and security are fully ensured.”
