Ertuğruloğlu: Israel’s Plan to Lease Aegean Islands Is a Repetition of Its Occupation Project
Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu criticized Israel’s recent proposal to lease Greek islands in the Aegean and settle its citizens there, calling it a continuation of the occupation strategy used in Palestine. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ertuğruloğlu described the idea as “flawed” and said, “In my personal view, this is a repetition of the Palestinian occupation project.”
He warned that the plan, which has been circulating in Israel, aims to encircle both Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Ertuğruloğlu also highlighted the growing ties between Israel and the Greek Cypriot Administration, suggesting that Israel intends to expand from Southern Cyprus toward the Aegean islands.
“The mentality behind this is dangerous, motivated by objectives of encirclement,” Ertuğruloğlu said, adding that such actions should be considered a “cause for war.” He concluded, “This is a revival of the early 20th-century mindset, seeking to seize islands in Cyprus and the Aegean.”
