Labor Minister Hasipoğlu Defends Cost-of-Living Decree, Says Measure Prevented Payroll Crisis
Labor and Social Security Minister Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has defended the controversial cost-of-living allowance decree, describing it not as “a savings measure” but as a “preemptive step” to prevent financial disruption.
Speaking about the recent parliamentary adjournment, Hasipoğlu said it occurred at the request of the CTP and stressed that without the precautionary measure, the government would have fallen into the same mistake the party had faced in the past, reaching a point where salaries could not be paid. “The law behind the decree will take effect,” he added.
Outlining the government’s roadmap, Hasipoğlu assured that no one would be left disadvantaged, noting that the cost-of-living allowance would be provided to both public and private sector employees. He added that adjustments would be made for groups allegedly affected and said the government would reassess the situation in May–June, amid ongoing global uncertainties. “No one in the world can predict what will happen. We are not in an easy, stable region,” he remarked.
Hasipoğlu also emphasized that while the decision to “freeze” the allowance was discussed in the Council of Ministers, it was not produced by them, and that the precautionary measure taken represented the most optimal solution under the circumstances.
