South Cyprus Residents Protest UK Base Antenna Plan
Plans by British bases in the Agrotur area to install 32 new antennas and expropriate 340 acres of land have sparked strong reactions from local residents. Municipal authorities and environmental organizations announced that they will pursue both legal and activist measures against the project.
Haravgi reported that Pandelis Georgiyu, mayor of Kuriu, immediately opposed the plan in his capacity as head of the committee reviewing the UK request, refusing consent for the antenna installations. Georgiyu informed both British authorities and the South Cyprus Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior about the municipality’s position, stating that legal action would be taken to suspend the UK plans.
The report also noted that environmental groups are ready to organize protests with local residents and other organizations to oppose the project.
