Üstel Hits Back at Erhurman, Says Remarks Detached from Reality

In a written statement, Üstel argued that Erhurman failed to grasp the seriousness of the situation, contrasting it with what he described as social media rhetoric. He said Erhurman’s characterization of recent developments as a “bad joke” was itself misplaced.

“We have read the President’s statement, which is far removed from the realities of the country and the world. It is clear that he still cannot distinguish between seriousness and joking, or between the gravity of the situation and engaging in social media,” Üstel said.

He emphasized that the ongoing war in the Middle East, the resulting economic difficulties, rising oil prices, and their broader impact are not matters to be taken lightly.

Üstel also referred to what he described as South Cyprus policies that could turn the island into a focal point of conflict, as well as Turkey’s military measures to protect Turkish Cypriots, stating that these developments cannot be dismissed as jokes.

“While the President may be living in a world of jokes and social media, we live in the real world,” Üstel said, adding that the government’s responsibility is to address the country’s economic and social challenges through rational policies rather than rhetoric.
