Abuse, Corruption Allegations Rock South Cyprus, Claims Denied
Allegations of sexual abuse and corruption made by journalist and political figure Makarios Drusiotis have triggered widespread controversy in South Cyprus, with those named in the claims strongly denying the accusations.
According to reports in the Greek Cypriot press, Drusiotis—who is also a parliamentary candidate for the Volt party—published a detailed statement of around 4,000 words alleging misconduct involving former judges, state officials and politicians.
The claims include allegations that a former Supreme Court judge, Mihalis Hristodulu, sexually abused a 13-year-old girl, identified by the pseudonym “Sandy,” while in office. The report further alleges that the girl later became pregnant at 16 and witnessed what were described as large-scale corruption activities. Drusiotis said his claims are supported by messages in the possession of the alleged victim, as well as statements attributed to Hristodulu.
The article also raises allegations connected to the so-called “spy van” case, claiming that former MEP Dimitris Papadakis had access to communications involving Hristodulu. It further alleges links between former Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis and Tal Dilian, the founder of Intellexa, who was convicted over illegal surveillance activities.
Additional claims include accusations of bribery and the existence of “moles” within the Law Office, with Drusiotis alleging that sensitive information was leaked to Hristodulu. He also claimed that payments were made to silence the alleged victim, including significant sums transferred to individuals named in the report.
Former leader Nikos Anastasiadis rejected the allegations, referring to Drusiotis’ previous work and stating that he would await the outcome of an ongoing police investigation. He accused Drusiotis of making false and defamatory claims.
Hristodulu also denied the allegations, describing the statements as baseless and dismissing them in strong terms. Other individuals named in the report similarly rejected the claims, characterizing them as fabricated.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, while public debate over the allegations continues.
