Union Officials Deny Charges After Giving Police Statements
Union officials summoned by police over incidents during protests outside the Republic Assembly earlier this week have given their statements, rejecting all accusations and insisting they exercised their democratic rights.
The officials, including KTÖS Secretary-General Burak Maviş, Hür-İş and Kamu-İş President Ahmet Serdaroğlu, and KİEF and KTAMS President Güven Bengihan, were questioned at the Nicosia Police Headquarters.
Speaking after giving statements, Maviş described the March 30 protest as a “principled and honourable struggle,” while confirming that charges relate to alleged damage during the breaching of police barriers, obstruction and assault of officers, and incitement during the reading of a statement. He also accused police of using disproportionate force, including water and suspected chemical agents.
Serdaroğlu said the unions had exercised their democratic right to protest against the cost-of-living regulation, arguing that they were the ones subjected to violence. He criticised the government for escalating tensions rather than easing them.
Bengihan also rejected the charges, vowing that unions would not back down from their struggle, stating they were prepared to face consequences in defending the country’s future.
Clashes had broken out between police and union members during the demonstration earlier in the week.
