Unions Stage Nationwide Strike Over Cost-of-Living Measures
Public sector unions launched a fresh wave of strikes and protests across the country in response to the government’s cost-of-living measures.
A stage was set up on the road adjacent to the Republic Assembly, while crowds gathered around 10:20 a.m., converging from three different نقاط to assemble near the parliament.
Police deployed heavy security at the Assembly entrance, using fire trucks and barricades to control access.
Several political parties and mayors also supported the protest, while union leaders addressed the crowd from the stage.
During the speeches, some protesters attempted to move toward the Assembly’s main gate but were stopped by riot police, leading to clashes in which several people were injured.
The Republic Assembly, which had suspended its work last week, is expected to reconvene later in the day. The General Assembly is set to discuss the government’s cost-of-living regulation enacted by decree.
