‘They Will Either Resign Or Respect The Will Of The People’

KTOEÖS Secretary-General Tahir Gökçebel addressed protesters at the demonstration site, saying unions and the public have remained on high alert for days in response to what he described as an attempt to override the will of the people.

Gökçebel said union representatives had sought compromise from the outset to prevent further escalation, but accused the government and its partners of ignoring public demands.

He stated that the public had clearly expressed its position without expecting anything in return, adding that unions had conveyed their demands to ministers, the prime minister, and once again to the government through the president.

“The government has suffered both brain death and bodily death,” Gökçebel said.

Referring to the unions’ decision to wait until midnight, he said they had hoped for a compromise despite what he described as a last-minute decree process. “We were told in the evening that the decree would pass and the bill would be withdrawn and discussed in committee. But we were kept waiting until midnight,” he said.

Gökçebel stressed that there was no turning back at this stage, adding: “There is nothing left for us to answer. The response is now up to them. They will either resign or say yes to the will of the people. There is no return from here.”
