Two Arrested in Gönyeli Drug Operation, 4 Kg Seized
In Gönyeli, a “Silent Surveillance Operation” led to the seizure of a total of 3.596 kilograms of cannabis and 622 grams of cocaine. Two suspects, Viorel Ionut Stoică and Berk Balkanlar, were taken into custody and will remain detained for two days by court order.
Police officer Celal Durukan told the court that the suspects were apprehended on April 7, 2026, during a joint operation by the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Department and the Crime Prevention Branch of the Lefkosia Police. During searches, narcotics and a precision scale were recovered.
Stoică was found in possession of 122 grams of cocaine and 90 grams of cannabis, while Balkanlar had 3.5 kilograms of cannabis and 500 grams of cocaine. The police indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with witness statements to be taken and CCTV footage reviewed. The seized substances will also be sent for laboratory analysis.
After hearing the testimony, Judge Şevket Gazi ordered both suspects to remain in custody for two days.
