DP: We Will Not Be In Parliament On Monday
Serhat Akpınar, Secretary General of the Democrat Party (DP), announced that his party will not take part in Monday’s parliamentary session on the cost-of-living legislation, citing deepening political tensions and procedural concerns.
In a written statement, Akpınar said recent developments have exposed the fragility of the democratic process, arguing that the situation has escalated into a broader social crisis. He criticised what he described as “direct intervention” targeting Parliament, calling it unacceptable.
Akpınar also claimed that the DP had been systematically excluded from the decree process initiated by the government, despite being a coalition partner. He said the party had acted with a sense of state responsibility but could not accept the current situation.
He further argued that the process, launched through a decree with the force of law, had been transformed into a societal confrontation due to opposition pressure and union actions, eventually reaching the level of direct interference in Parliament.
While acknowledging that trade unions are an important part of society, Akpınar said no group can act as if it represents the entire public or exert pressure on constitutional institutions. He stressed that Parliament remains the primary institution representing the will of the people and warned that any attempt to influence it through external pressure undermines democracy.
Akpınar also criticised the handling of parliamentary proceedings, claiming sessions had been postponed without valid justification and pointing to what he described as irregular developments involving a parliamentary delegation leaving the country without the knowledge of other parties.
“Kendi getirdiği yasal düzenlemeye dahi sahip çıkamayan bir anlayışın oluşturduğu bu tabloya Demokrat Parti ortak olmayacaktır,” he said, reiterating that the DP will not participate in Monday’s session.
He concluded by stating that the party’s position is clear: “Democracy is realised in Parliament, not in the streets. It is governed by will, not pressure.”
