Pyla Dairy Dispute Rekindles Sovereignty Tensions
A new tension has emerged in the mixed village of Pyla, where Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots live together, over dairy farms located in the buffer zone, with the Greek Cypriot side reportedly framing the issue as a matter of sovereignty. Official authorities have not yet confirmed the developments.
It is reported that there are three to four Turkish Cypriot-owned dairy farms in the area, which supply milk directly to the south of Cyprus. Greek Cypriot veterinarians are said to cross the buffer zone to conduct inspections.
Local producers have recently shared videos on social media claiming that Turkish Cypriot authorities told Greek Cypriot veterinarians that they are not allowed to enter the area.
It is also alleged that, technically, the land access route to the farms from the Turkish Cypriot side passes through the buffer zone, which was planned accordingly.
The Greek Cypriot administration has described Turkish Cypriot activities in Pyla as an “expansion of occupation” and has reportedly raised the possibility of using force, framing the issue as a sovereignty matter. The situation was said to have been discussed at a meeting held last Monday.
The United Nations is reportedly treating the developments with “top secret” sensitivity.
There are also claims circulating that President Tufan Erhürman has not issued a direct reaction, with sources suggesting he described it as an “unconfirmed military matter,” while Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu is said to have taken a firmer stance.
According to unofficial reports, the Greek Cypriot side views the issue as a highly sensitive sovereignty matter.
The allegations have not been officially confirmed. The latest developments in Pyla have once again brought long-standing sovereignty disputes on the island into focus, with both sides maintaining their positions while the international community and the UN are closely monitoring the situation.
