Greek Cypriot Man Jailed For Two Months Over Drug Offences At Border Crossing
Renos Zertalis has been sentenced to two months in prison after being caught with drugs and a precision scale at the Metehan Border Crossing.
The verdict was delivered by the Nicosia Assize Court, composed of Presiding Judge Füsun Cemaller, Senior Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın, and Judge Gülay Uğur.
Reading the decision, Cemaller said that on February 12, 2026, at around 8:00 p.m., officers from the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate conducted a search of the defendant’s vehicle at Metehan Border Crossing, where they found approximately 3.5 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine, along with a precision scale, which were seized as evidence.
The court heard that the Greek Cypriot national, who entered the TRNC as a tourist, was held in custody for 10 days for investigation purposes before being remanded to prison on February 20 pending trial.
He was found guilty of importing and possessing drugs.
In determining the sentence, the court said it followed Supreme Court sentencing principles. It noted that while the quantity was small, the substance involved is considered among the most serious drug types.
The court treated the small quantity as a mitigating factor and the drug type as an aggravating factor. It also considered the defendant’s guilty plea and his chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) before sentencing him to two months in prison.
