Christodoulides, Lacroix Stress Need for Suitable Conditions in Buffer Zone for Talks
Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix stressed the need to create suitable conditions on the ground, particularly in the buffer zone, for Cyprus reunification talks to resume.
According to AlphaNews, Christodoulides said during the meeting that appropriate conditions in the field, especially in the buffer zone, were necessary for negotiations on the Cyprus issue to begin.
He thanked Lacroix for the United Nations’ continued interest in the Cyprus issue and said developments on the ground remained a matter of concern for the Greek Cypriot side, adding that they wanted to consult with the UN on the issue.
Lacroix, in turn, thanked Christodoulides for his support for the UN’s efforts on Cyprus and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to provide all possible assistance.
He also stressed that conditions should remain as calm as possible to help create the right environment for progress in the negotiations.
