Lacroix: ‘Very Productive and Useful Meeting’ With Erhürman
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix said his meeting with President Tufan Erhürman was “very productive and useful,” stressing the importance of regular contact with the Turkish Cypriot side.
Speaking after the meeting, Lacroix said he thanked Erhürman for his time and underlined that continued engagement with the Turkish Cypriot side was essential for the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
He said UNFICYP plays a critical role in maintaining calm in the Buffer Zone, preventing incidents, and helping de-escalate tensions when they occur.
“This is critical, because maintaining calm allows the political process—under the strong support and determination of UN Secretary-General António Guterres—to continue,” he said.
Lacroix added that the exchange of views with the Turkish Cypriot leadership was highly valuable and said he attached importance to the continuation of such “very productive contacts.”
