South Cyprus Poll: Federation Remains Leading Solution With 39% Support
A poll conducted by Stratego/IMR for Kathimerini ahead of the general election scheduled for May 26 in the south of Cyprus shows that the preferred solution to the Cyprus problem remains a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, supported by 39% of respondents.
The survey, which included a wide range of political and institutional questions, also found that trust in political parties remains below 20% across the board.
Cyprus problem preferences
According to the results, 39% of respondents support a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, while 29% favour a unitary state. A further 12% support maintaining the status quo, 9% favour a two-state solution, and 3% support a confederation model.
Election snapshot
When asked “if elections were held tomorrow,” respondents gave 20.2% to DISY, 18.5% to AKEL, 12.6% to ELAM, 8.9% to ALMA, 7.4% to DIKO, and 5.7% to the Democratic Alliance. Volt is projected at 4.2%, EDEK at 2.3%, Ecologists at 2.1%, DIKO at 1.2%, and other smaller parties below 2%.
Undecided voters stand at 8.1%, while 2.4% said they would abstain.
Trust and leadership ratings
The poll also highlights low levels of institutional trust, with no party exceeding 20% trust. President Nikos Christodoulides received 48% positive and 43% negative views on his performance.
Institutional confidence decline
Data from RIK surveys since 1996 indicate a long-term decline in public trust in institutions, including government, parliament, police, judiciary, and public services, with confidence levels dropping sharply over the past three decades.
NATO and regional security
On potential NATO membership for Cyprus, 52% of respondents supported the idea, while 35% opposed it.
The survey also shows strong public concern over developments in the Middle East, with 78% expressing high or moderate levels of concern.
The overall findings underline both political fragmentation and institutional distrust in the run-up to the May 26 election, while reaffirming federation as the leading preferred solution to the Cyprus issue.
