Speaking at a press conference in Kyrenia, Altuğra said she was addressing the public not only to announce a personal political decision but also to highlight what she described as a “deep crisis of confidence” in politics.

She said the UBP, once a political movement rooted in state responsibility, integrity and public interest, has seen those values “seriously and irreparably eroded.”

Altuğra cited recent fake diploma scandals, allegations of bribery and misconduct, controversial public sector appointments and alleged interest networks between politics and certain individuals as factors that have undermined public trust.

“State governance must remain free even from the slightest suspicion,” she said.

Altuğra argued that the main responsibility for the country’s current situation lies with the government and UBP leadership, adding that the process has weakened the party’s historical mission and eroded its credibility in the eyes of society.

She said she entered politics not for office but to speak out, stressing that she has consistently taken a stand against practices she considers wrong.

Altuğra said she had long hoped the party could return to its core values but now believes the current leadership has moved significantly away from its founding principles and state tradition, making principled politics impossible under the present structure.

“Remaining silent in the face of this situation would have meant avoiding moral responsibility,” she said, announcing her resignation from the party she had been proud to belong to for many years.

Describing her decision as a matter of principle rather than political calculation, Altuğra said she would serve as an independent MP until the elections, after which she intends to continue her political career with the People’s Party.

“I am not leaving politics. I will continue as a clean and accountable politician,” she said.

Responding to questions, Altuğra said her resignation stemmed from a long-standing “principled struggle,” adding that she has no grievances with party members and that her criticism was directed at the leadership.

She said she would continue her political path with those who support her, noting that every politician has their own voter base.

Asked whether she held any resentment toward fellow UBP MPs, she replied: “I have no resentment toward anyone.”

Altuğra said her political stance is based on state integrity, merit and the rule of law, adding that the country faces shortcomings in areas such as childcare, elderly care, disability services and women’s shelters.

She also criticized public sector recruitment practices, calling for merit-based hiring through the Public Service Commission examinations.
