Speaking to Yeni Bakış Web TV, Atan criticised the government’s handling of the economy and shortcomings in public services, while also reacting to recent price hikes and what he described as unqualified appointments in the public sector.

“SYSTEM MUST CHANGE”

Atan said changing individuals within the current system would not solve the country’s problems, insisting that the parliamentary system had “reached the end of its lifespan.”

“The electoral system must change. MPs should not become ministers. There are qualified bureaucrats in this country and they should be carrying out these duties. A presidential system suitable to the country’s structure should be introduced,” he said.

“PRICE HIKES EVERYWHERE, BUT NO SERVICES”

Criticising recent increases in fees and funds, Atan said the public was being crushed by nearly 40 percent hikes, accusing the government of passing the burden onto citizens while constantly speaking of financial difficulties.

Recalling that the cost-of-living rate had reached around 12 percent, Atan argued that taxpayers were not receiving adequate services in return.

He warned that further increases in electricity and fuel prices were imminent.

“Everything from A to Z will become more expensive. Citizens are forced to drive on dark roads. Vehicle licence fees are collected, but the roads are in terrible condition and the streetlights do not work,” he said.

ATAOĞLU CRITICISED OVER APPOINTMENT

Atan also criticised Deputy Prime Minister and DP leader Fikri Ataoğlu over the appointment of a temporary worker as branch chief at the Kyrenia Environmental Protection Department, describing the move as a “scandal.”

Accusing the government of ignoring merit-based appointments, Atan said: “The government talks about merit, but Ataoğlu acts as if he can do whatever he wants. You are giving a temporary worker managerial responsibility — will you also give them signing authority?”

Atan concluded by saying the country was approaching a critical period and argued that society would either accept the current system or push for major change.
