Labour Inspectors Halt Operations At Four Construction Sites In Kyrenia
Labour Department inspectors halted operations at four construction sites in Kyrenia after identifying serious safety violations during inspections carried out as part of Occupational Health and Safety Week.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, inspections were conducted by inspectors from all six districts between May 4-10 within the framework of Occupational Health and Safety Week.
The inspections covered construction sites in Kyrenia as well as workplaces from various sectors in the Çatalköy and Karaoğlanoğlu industrial areas.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu and Labour Department Director Emrah Güven also accompanied inspectors during the visits.
Speaking after the inspections, Hasipoğlu stressed that occupational health and safety is “a responsibility that cannot be postponed.”
“We continue inspections across all six districts through our affiliated departments. Occupational health and safety is extremely important for us,” he said.
Hasipoğlu stated that Labour Department teams had inspected 1,350 workplaces over the past three months and imposed nearly 19 million TL in fines.
“Preventing workplace accidents, especially at construction sites, is one of our priority responsibilities,” he said.
He added that preventing workplace accidents is not solely the responsibility of the state, but also of employers, employees and occupational safety experts.
A total of 25 workplaces were inspected in Kyrenia on Thursday, including 18 businesses and seven construction sites, focusing on occupational health and safety compliance as well as unregistered employment.
The Labour Department said operations at four construction sites were suspended due to serious deficiencies, while written warnings were issued to three others over identified shortcomings.
