Christodoulides: Cyprus’ International Presence Is Linked to the Cyprus Problem
Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides said the international standing of South Cyprus is linked to efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
According to Haravgi, speaking after a memorial ceremony held yesterday for two EOKA members, Christodoulides connected efforts to strengthen South Cyprus’ international presence with attempts to restart Cyprus negotiations.
Responding to questions from journalists, Christodoulides said South Cyprus is “an independent sovereign EU and UN member state” that also holds the rotating presidency of the Council of Europe, adding that it would continue to play an active role internationally.
“The elevated position of Cyprus also strengthens efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework and EU principles and values,” he said.
Christodoulides also referred to the international response toward South Cyprus and its connection with domestic governance issues, citing his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates as an example.
He said energy and water issues were discussed during the visit and noted that when assistance was needed, he had approached the UAE president and received a positive response.
Nikos Christodoulides said that “foreign policy is linked to domestic policy and contributes both to the country’s advancement and to strengthening efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.”
