According to the newspaper, the initiative is being led by former European Parliament member Takis Hadjigeorgiou, who argues that a UN centre could contribute to the peace process and help strengthen trust and security between the two communities.

The initiative has been presented to the government, political parties, and parliament, and is reportedly supported by dozens of well-known public figures who have signed in favour of the proposal.

Supporters say that establishing a UN centre in Cyprus could significantly enhance the sense of security among all Cypriots in the event of a settlement, while also improving the prospects for renewed negotiations.

The statement also calls on the Greek Cypriot leadership, party leaders, and parliament to promote the proposal in international forums and advance it on the diplomatic agenda.
