Restaurant Union Calls for Affordable, Quality Meat Imports
The TRNC Restaurant Owners Association (Res-Bir) has called for a solution to the imported meat issue, demanding the introduction of affordable, high-quality meat to the market or the liberalisation of meat imports from South Cyprus.
In a written statement, Res-Bir argued that the crisis in the market is deepening by the day and claimed that disputes between livestock breeders, butchers, trade unions and the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources have been ongoing for a long time.
The association said both the public and business owners were being negatively affected by the situation and recalled that protests had also been held against imported meat during the process.
Res-Bir stated that despite promises to establish a cooperative system and provide “cheap, quality meat,” affordable meat had still not reached the market and no effective system had been implemented.
The statement further claimed that consumers were purchasing cheaper meat from South Cyprus, while local business owners were struggling to survive and searching for solutions to remain operational.
