Father Sought After Allegedly Abducting Child And Crossing Into TRNC
A new arrest has been made in the investigation into the abduction of a two-year-old child in Limassol, as authorities continue searching for the father, who is believed to have taken the child into the TRNC.
Police said a 53-year-old Turkish Cypriot man was taken into custody in connection with the case. Investigators believe the suspect acted together with the child’s father during the incident.
The rental vehicle allegedly used in the abduction was later found in the British Bases area.
Authorities suspect the father crossed into the north following the incident. Greek Cypriot press reports claimed he may currently be in the Famagusta area and allegedly shared a video showing the child.
Mother Asked To Identify Suspect
According to Greek Cypriot press reports, the child’s mother visited Limassol Police Headquarters on Thursday to identify the second suspect.
Her lawyer, Ioannis Michalakis, said the woman had moved with her child to the government-controlled areas in October last year after previously seeking assistance from authorities over security concerns.
Claims Of Violence And Threats
The lawyer alleged that the child’s father, a Turkish citizen, had previously threatened the mother on multiple occasions and was allegedly involved in drug-related activities.
According to the allegations, the father arrived at the woman’s residence in a rental vehicle accompanied by another individual.
“He tried to drown the mother in the swimming pool, while the other person took the baby and fled in the vehicle,” Michalakis claimed.
Police sources said the father had illegally crossed into the government-controlled areas through a crossing point in the buffer zone before meeting the second suspect in a white rental car and heading to the mother’s home.
Wanted Since 2025
Authorities said the Bi-communal Technical Committee on Crime had also been informed about the case as efforts continue to locate the child and return the child safely to the mother.
Police also confirmed that the father had been wanted since November 2025 on domestic violence-related charges.
The mother was reportedly under the “Elpis” special protection programme and had a police emergency alert application on her phone. However, reports said the attack unfolded too suddenly and violently for her to activate the alarm in time.
