In a written statement, Üstel said: “Turkey has never committed war crimes in Cyprus.”

He argued that the Turkish Cypriot community was the side that suffered atrocities on the island, claiming that Turkish Cypriots were subjected to killings, village burnings and other violence carried out by what he described as “Greek Cypriot-Greek fascism”, including the 1974 coup period.

Üstel said Turkey’s 1974 military intervention ended the violence and bloodshed on the island and prevented the “annihilation” of the Turkish Cypriot people, adding that it restored security and stability.

He stated that the operation also created a lasting environment of peace and security for both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, and said today’s conditions are rooted in the events of 20 July 1974.

The prime minister further argued that Turkey remains the only guarantor power ensuring the security of Turkish Cypriots and maintaining stability on the island for more than five decades.

Üstel reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot side will not accept any future settlement that excludes Turkey, and reaffirmed commitments to sovereign equality, guarantees, and close ties with Ankara.

He warned that provocative statements would not go unanswered, and said no one has the power to sever the historical and political ties between Turkish Cypriots and Turkey.
