67 Traffic Accidents in One Week Leave 31 Injured

A total of 67 traffic accidents were recorded across the country over the past week, leaving 31 people injured, while police traffic inspections resulted in legal action against 2,869 drivers.

According to information released by the Police Press Office, 23 of the accidents that occurred between 11-17 May resulted in injuries, while 44 caused material damage. The total financial cost of the accidents was estimated at 4 million 125 thousand TL.

Speeding was identified as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 23 cases. This was followed by failure to stop at junctions with 19 cases, close following with 10, careless driving with 9, and other causes with 6.

The highest number of accidents occurred in Nicosia with 25 cases, followed by Kyrenia with 19, Famagusta with 12, Iskele with 6, and Morphou with 5.

During the same period, police conducted traffic checks on 16,996 drivers across the country. Authorities reported 2,869 drivers for various traffic offences and initiated legal proceedings against them.

A total of 349 vehicles were removed from traffic, while 15 drivers were arrested.

Police said the recorded offences included 1,125 speeding violations, 281 cases of driving without a valid road licence, 128 vehicles without inspection, 110 violations of traffic signs and signals, and 92 cases involving uninsured vehicles or vehicles driven outside insurance coverage.

Other offences included driving without a seatbelt, drunk driving, careless driving, illegal window tinting, using mobile phones while driving, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and motorcycle riders operating without protective helmets.
