TDP Calls for Clarification Over Embryo Incident at Ercan Airport
The Communal Democracy Party (TDP) Health Committee has called for a full investigation into the incident in which four embryos were intercepted at Ercan Airport while allegedly being taken out of the country without authorisation.
In a statement, the party said the case cannot be treated solely as a smuggling incident, stressing that it involves serious allegations concerning human life, ethical standards, and women’s and children’s rights.
The statement noted that the rapidly expanding “health tourism” sector has been left without adequate regulatory oversight, warning that the incident could have implications for the country’s international reputation.
The party raised several questions for public clarification, including whether the suspect acted alone, whether an organised or international network was involved, whether similar cases had occurred previously, which IVF centres were linked to the embryos, and whether authorities are investigating potential human trafficking or illegal biological material trafficking.
It also called for IVF clinics to be brought under a modern, transparent, and strictly regulated legal framework, arguing that insufficient oversight in the health sector has become unsustainable.
The statement urged that the investigation be conducted independently and transparently, that all relevant medical institutions be inspected, that legal regulations governing fertility clinics be updated, and that the public be kept regularly informed, stating that the country “cannot become a centre of lawlessness and unregulated activity.”
