One Thousand And Seventy Divorces Recorded In One Year
According to the 2025 report of the High Judicial Council, family courts in Northern Cyprus received 2,050 cases over the course of the year. Of the 1,363 cases concluded, 1,070 resulted in divorce rulings. The number of divorces increased by 2.20 percent compared to the previous year.
Family court data for 2025 in Northern Cyprus shows a picture that is significant not only in numerical terms but also in social impact.
According to the High Judicial Council report, family courts issued 1,070 divorce decisions during the year, while civil registry officers responsible for marriage ceremonies recorded 1,051 marriages in the same period.
In other words, official records show that the number of divorces exceeded the number of marriages. When 440 marriages conducted through Turkish consulates are included, the total number of official marriages rises to 1,491. This means that for every 10 marriage procedures, approximately 7 divorce rulings were issued.
The breakdown of divorces by family structure presents another notable picture. Of the 1,070 divorces, 371 involved childless couples, while 699 involved couples with children. This indicates that nearly two-thirds of divorces occurred in families with children. The highest figure was recorded in one-child families with 366 divorces, followed by two-child families with 268 cases. Divorces were also recorded among families with three or more children.
When examining the causes of divorce, the largest share was attributed to uncontested cases. According to the report, 805 divorces were concluded either through joint applications or when one party accepted the other’s claim. In contrast, 236 divorces were granted on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown of marriage, while 29 were based on couples living separately for two years. This indicates that a significant portion of divorces were concluded through mutual agreement rather than prolonged legal disputes.
The distribution by length of marriage also stands out. The highest number of divorces occurred among couples married for 16 years or more, with 314 cases recorded. The prevalence of separations in long-term marriages indicates that marital breakdown is not limited to newly formed unions but also affects long-standing relationships.
