Erhürman: Ready for Talks Within Set Principles

In a statement posted on social media, Erhürman announced that Holguin will arrive on the island in one week.

Recalling that elections in Southern Cyprus have been completed and that the European Union presidency will soon come to an end, Erhürman said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is gradually launching initiatives related to the anticipated new process on Cyprus.

The full statement by Erhürman reads as follows:

“UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Ms Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, will be on the island in one week.

Elections have taken place in the south. The presidency of the Council of the European Union will also come to an end shortly.

The Secretary-General is gradually initiating efforts related to his expected new initiative.

A series of statements have been made from both the north and the south of the island regarding this issue. We are ready to engage in talks in good faith, in line with our people’s will for a solution and within the framework of the principles and approaches we have put forward for a long time.

It is neither right to raise expectations disproportionately nor to attempt to kill the process before it has even begun.

Resolving problems on the island and in the region is the path to achieving lasting peace and stability from which everyone will benefit. The only way to achieve this is through dialogue and diplomacy.

As always, we are preparing with patience, composure, seriousness and determination. We will not make unnecessary statements. Nor will we rush to respond to unnecessary statements. At the same time, we will not refrain from making the necessary statements in line with our people’s right to be informed and not misled.

We are in favour of dialogue and diplomacy to solve problems, not of creating problems, escalating them or talking excessively.

May it be beneficial.”
