According to a report by the newspaper Alithia, von der Leyen said that the Cyprus issue was also raised during her recent exchange with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. She noted that the EU is “ready to assume an active and constructive role at all stages of the process.”

Von der Leyen described Turkey as an important partner for the European Union, stressing the need for close cooperation to promote stability, security, long-term peace and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean. She also said there is a shared objective of de-escalating tensions in the Middle East and protecting civilians.

She added that it would be strategically beneficial for the EU to maintain a stable and secure region and to develop a mutually beneficial relationship with Turkey based on international law.

Regarding the Mediterranean Pact, von der Leyen said the Commission is working in excellent cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus on its preparation, particularly on the first Action Plan implementing its flagship initiatives.

She noted that the agreement could bring significant benefits to Cyprus in areas such as energy, security and connectivity, adding that Cyprus serves as a bridge between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. She highlighted its strategic role, particularly in renewable energy, energy diversification and regional connectivity projects.
