South Cyprus Police: No Evidence Found in “Sandy Case” Allegations
The South Cyprus Police have said that no evidence was found to support allegations raised in the so-called “Sandy case,” which was launched following claims made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis.
According to Politis, which gave the story prominent coverage, the police concluded in their final investigation report that the allegations were unfounded and that no supporting evidence was identified.
Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis said in a statement that the findings were clear, as no evidence had been produced against the individuals named in the allegations. He also said that messages and information forming the basis of the claims were deemed false.
The Legal Service has reportedly instructed police to launch a criminal investigation into possible offences related to the creation, publication and dissemination of false news.
Journalist Makarios Drousiotis reacted to the findings, arguing that the conclusions were in line with narratives that had circulated in the media since the beginning of the investigation. He also claimed they matched statements made by former Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis.
