Üstel: Fidan’s Two-State Message Reflects Turkish Cypriot Will
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has voiced support for Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s remarks following his meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, saying the two-state solution vision reflects the “determined stance” of the Turkish Cypriot people.
In a statement, Üstel welcomed Fidan’s position that the federal model has been exhausted and that a solution can only be achieved on the basis of sovereign equality and equal international status through a two-state framework.
He argued that the reality on the island consists of “two separate peoples and two separate states,” adding that a lasting and sustainable settlement depends on acknowledging this situation.
Üstel stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people’s sovereign rights and equal international status are “not open to negotiation,” and said the government will continue to fully align with Türkiye in supporting a two-state solution policy.
He also thanked Fidan for his support of the Turkish Cypriot position on international platforms.
